BOER GOATS

Boer DoesIn 2000 Thorps began researching the addition of Boer Goats to the farming operation.  In 2002 ten bred Full Blood does were purchased from Rollie Rosenboom, Clifton, Illinios. These does were Ennobled Concho granddaughters bred to NK 8 Cylinders, a NK CEO son.  Four of the best resulting doe kids from this mating remain in the doe herd.

Windrush Valentino, a NK 8 Cylinders son, is the sire of numerous does in our herd. He was sold to Don Moothart in 2006. Windrush Valentino wethers have been the Grand Champion Wethers at the 2004, 2005 and 2006 Iowa State Fairs. A second NK 8 Cylinders' son, Rose Beau Geste Beau, was added in April, 2005, and remains senior herd sire.

Windrush Boers strives to raise top quality Boer Goats and continues to upgrade our herd. Kidding takes place in the fall and February. In 2006 several new bucks were added: S2 Spinning Rhombus (S2 Trickey’s Ace in the Hole x S2 Disco Doll), S2 640 (TH The Big Cat x S2 Dixie Trick), ANR 10 and PBL 6B56 (TLB Jack sons) and ANR Waylan (a Willie Nelson son).

In order to further improve the goat herd an artificial insemination program began in 2004.  Dr. Bill Davis, Santa Rosa, California, Dr. Lisa King, Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Chris Stapleton, Burraga, NSW, Australia, have been and continue to be instrumental in helping achieve success in this endeavor. Windrush Valentino, Rose Beau Geste Beau and ANR Waylan have been collected and frozen semen is available.

Healthy goats are extremely important to us. Windrush maintains a CAE negative herd. A close working relationship with our veterinarians is an important component of herd health. All new herd additions are tested for CAE and CL and isolated for seven weeks. Vaccinations are current and fecals are regularly checked. Goats are only wormed when needed in order to avoid anthelmenthic resistance. Milking ability in the doe herd is also important, consequently, any doe retained must be strong in this trait.

Thorps enjoy good livestock and choose to breed a smaller number of goats. In order to continually upgrade new animals will be purchased from select breeders. There will always be quality goats for sale. Please feel free to inspect our herd and contact us for information or help.

In 2005 Thorps became interested in pursuing the wether market. Vern is President of the newly formed Tall Corn Meat Goat Wether Association Inc.
