In
1992 thirteen Dorset ewes were purchased from Eugene and Jeff
Poynter, Paris, Illinois. These ewes became the basis of the
Windrush flock. Our goal was to maintain size and meatiness, out of
season breeding and good milking and mothering ability. Since then
we have purchased a small number of additional ewes and rams from
Poynters. In 1993 a ram, A. Diel 215 (Oklahoma State 212 x Quail
Creek 1372), was purchased to breed to these ewes. The resulting
daughters were excellent ewes.
Dr. Leroy
Boyd was kind enough to allow us to have his ram, Moore 300, in
1998. This unique ram had a high coefficient of inbreeding. Moore
300 was an “outcross” ram on our Poynter/Diel daughters. When
Mississippi State University dispersed their flock, a few ewes were
purchased that were daughters or granddaughters of Moore 300. They
were added to our flock.
From 2000 to
2004 Windrush J16A (Moore 300 x 16A – J Poynter) was used
extensively as our primary ram. A second ram 5D Dorsets 14-00
(McCarthy 9005 x 5D Dorsets 16-98) was also used. This ram was
related to A. Diel 215 on the dam side. The daughters of one ram
were bred to the other ram. Late in 2003 a trip was made to Roger
Huntrod’s to look at rams. Huntrods 4777 (‘Kudzu’ Dogwood Hills x
Huntrods 4694) caught our eye. Roger did decide to part with
this ram in May, 2004.
Mithoefer
4002 (‘Pacific Pride’ Reynolds Stock Farm x Mithoefer 4002) was
purchased in March, 2004. He has bred ewes owned by both Windrush
Farms and KG Farms. Plans are to breed the daughters of one
ram back to the other.
In 2005,
the decision was made to disperse the ewe flock. The majority
of the ewes have gone to KG Farms. Dr. Lisa King and her
husband, Mick, are going to continue to work towards the original
goals of the Windrush flock. An outcross ram bred by Sanford
and Sons, Sandford and Sons D172, was purchased in 2005. He
will be used, along with the Mithoefer and Huntrods rams, to
continue to breed "practical sheep for practical shepherds."
Dr. King will
be happy to blood test ram lambs prior to purchase for scrapie
susceptibility. Dr. King also offers semen evaluation.
